CHALLENGE

Prince George’s County DPW&T offers transit services throughout the County.  As technology is advancing and the needs of users are changing, the County needs to change with it to offer improved service to customers.  The County was seeking to right-size their vision for future transit services by modifying their operations and seeking input from riders and decision makers interested in improving the system for County residents. The Transit Vision plan will n create a roadmap for the County to improve its transit operations, most pointedly, TheBus fixed route system. The County is committed to making sure that the future plans will meet the needs of their customers and that they will equitably benefit the riders and encourage new people to begin using the system.

EARLY ACTIONS

CREATING THE VISION

The completed Transit Vision Plan (TVP) will provide the County with a roadmap for implementing service, facility, and operational enhancements to improve the County's transit system for the benefit of all County residents.  Using the best engagement strategies, the County will make sure the plan incorporates feedback from current and future users.

ASSEDO’S IMPACT

During the early phases of the project, the regional service provider, WMATA, was in the middle of a public input process to get input on proposed changes to bus operations and create a Better Bus Network throughout the region. We integrated a series of additional questions to add to the survey instrument to solicit input specifically from users of TheBus and to build awareness of the County’s new project coming online.  By collecting demographic and perception data, we were able to build on the County’s database of transit users and learn where the County’s users wanted to see changes made to services.  Our team joined WMATA at pop-up meetings within the County to share preliminary input and increase awareness of the Vision Plan process.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

●      Prepared supplementary survey instrument to collect critical demographic supporting data

●      Collaborated with WMATA to participate in community centric pop-up events

●      Developed public friendly collateral to build awareness of project
